Where was Gustavus Vassa born?
This question comes down to who do you believe, Vassa, and what he stated in a variety of contexts and situations, or his godparents who attested to his birth place at his baptism in St. Margaret's Church next to Westminster Abbey and across from the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Where is the authentic voice here? Certainly his godparents knew he came from Virginia, not South Carolina, but they got that wrong. They knew because Maynard Guerin, the godfather, was the accountant for his cousin, who was none other than Vassa's master, who was in Virginia buying tobacco when he was given the boy by a Mr. Campbell.
